A Book Written by the Devil: It Is Older than 800 Years, but It Shows no Signs of Aging (Photos + Video)
The Codex Gigas is the largest, most intriguing, and probably the weirdest manuscript ever written, not just in Europe, but in the whole world. However, what’s even more interesting about it is the story surrounding its ‘age’. It’s believed that The Devil’s Bible is a large manuscript which required 160 animal skins to be completed. What’s more, it’s so heavy that it requires at least 2 people to be lifted and it’s almost 2 inches long.

Deal with the Devil?

According to the legend, this medieval manuscript is a product of a ‘deal with the devil’. It’s written in Latin, presumably at the beginning of the 13th century. Even though its geographical origin is not known, it’s believed that it was written by a Benedictine monk.
The legend also has it that this monk from the Middle Ages was sentenced to being walled up alive for breaking his monastic vows. Hence, to avoid punishment, he promised to write, in a single night, the book ‘containing all human knowledge’.

As midnight approached, he became desperate and turned to Lucifer for help, offering him a pact to finish the book in exchange for his soul. Lucifer agreed and signed the work by adding his self-portrait. However, this is opposite to newest research which has shown that the work was completed in 3 decades.
Tests to recreate the calligraphy of the Devil’s Bible point out that it would take 5 years of non-stop writing. Additionally, the author of this massive tome was possessed by something to create such a masterpiece and whether it was the power of light or darkness, is lost to time, says the report in The Line Up.

Illustrations of the Devil

The manuscript contains smaller writings which contain topics like exorcism, magical formulas, illustrations of the Heavenly city and Lucifer, etc. Interestingly, the page where the illustration of Lucifer is located, as well as the surrounding pages, seemed to have been burned. In the past, this was very significant and it was considered to be a sign of the devil, i.e. some believe that it was the devil himself that burned the pages.
Codex Gigas contains 5 long texts and the complete Bible. It begins with the Old Testament, and it has two works by Flavius Josephus who lived in the first century AD. It ends with the New Testament and the last of the long works is a Chronicle of Bohemia by Cosmas from Prague.
